MOST RECENT WINNER!
Andrea Nepa Daisy Troop #901 Activity Director Haddonfield, NJ

Vietnamese Fried Bananas with Ice Cream sounds like a wonderful treat, and is one of the special recipes Daisy Troop Activity Director Andrea Nepa served during one of her lessons. Using the book, Evening Meals Around the World and the other books in the series, Daisy Troop #901 in Haddonfield, NJ gathered for a fun evening of multicultural meals and education in understanding different cultures through their food. The 17 Daisies focused on the theme, "Respect for Myself and Others" and learned that there is a lot of great food throughout the world! They passed around socks full of dried food such as rice, couscous, corn, beans, and pasta and had fun guessing which foods they were by what they felt like. The girls made magazine cut-out collages of different foods and created their own paper plates full of good foods. The night ended with a new snack of Asian Rice Crackers, Fortune Cookies and a take-home gift of Chopsticks to use at home.

Their lesson, and the book Evening Meals Around World, includes food descriptions from America, Australia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, India, Morocco, Italy, and Mexico. This book, along with Morning Meals Around the World, Midday Meals Around the World, and Snack Time Around the World are full of foods from different cultures with a few great recipes as well. These books combined with fun activities are a great way to introduce children to different foods from different cultures!

Kate Giovingo, a physical education instructor for Grades K-2 in Rockford, IL has introduced healthy eating and combined it with physical activities-this is exactly the goal for our company. The students at her school learn to expand their knowledge of fruits and vegetables in PE class and with take-home recipes. By using items such as School-to-Home Idea Bags for the Kitchen, we can bridge the gap between school and home to reinforce health and nutrition. Each week Kate sends the children home with a new recipef rom Cup Cooking that includes the fruits and vegetables shown in class. These easy to use recipes not only get the child involved in cooking with their parents but shows them how fun it can be to use produce. This year’s theme is to make a rainbow with your plate. Using fake food like Play Fruits, Vegetables, and Producee can show the children what to do at home. During her PE class, Ms. Giovingo uses the Ryan’s Room Loop to Loop Parachute to lay over the Fruit and Vegetable Seedie Sets. Each child gets to go under the parachute, grab an item, and place it on top. Once all produce is on the parachute, the fun really starts! You can make a fruit salad with all the fruits or vegetable soup with your favorite vegetables. To toss the salad or get the soup boiling, each student will hold onto the parachute handles and shake shake shake! Introducing children to fruits and vegetables in a fun way will reinforce the importance of eating healthy and increases their desire to fill each day with healthy alternatives.

Karen Van de Voorde   Heart of the Bride Ministries North Haiti

After teaching for over 20 years, Karen has offered her time to an organization called Heart of the Bride Ministries. She, along with 6 other people will be traveling into the mountains of North Haiti to a small village called Mare Rouge. There, she will teach at a school with 150 students from Pre-K to 6th grade. The focus in the village school for this November will be health and hygiene. The organization works with orphanages in 3rd world countries and this village trip is just one of many. This will be her second trip to Haiti and she will bring lots of our products along with her. To reinforce health and hygiene to these children, Karen will bring hygiene posters such as Take Care of Yourself and Washing Your Hands. Also, to show an importance in staying healthy and caring for yourself, she will take books like What Are Germs?, Me and My Amazing Body, and Brushing Well. We applaud Karen and Heart of the Bride Ministries for spreading the importance and necessity of taking care of yourself and your body.

Aimee Goyette Food Science and Nutrition Student at the College of Saint Elizabeth Morristown, NJ

Aimee Goyette, a student of Food Science and Nutrition at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ has been using her enthusiasm of nutrition and health to aid young children. In her spare time, Aimee visits her local library to read books about food, healthy eating habits, and gardening to the children during story time hour. In the month of March, National Nutrition Month, Aimee held a month long coloring contest and the winners received our Fruit and Vegetable Seedies, a great incentive for all health related activities. Recently, she was given display space at the library and used the Felt Food Pyramid and Display Board to create a fun and eye-catching presentation. In April, Aimee let each child make their own vegetable garden using decorated tera cota pots, plant seeds, and the book Grow It Again. Through ideas and products of NEAT Solutions, Aimee was given the tools to spread the message of choosing and enjoying healthful foods. Aimee has used products like I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato and Gregory the Terrible Eater to make food education fun for children and adults alike.

Judith Miller Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners Las Lagunas, Nicaragua

Judith Miller, a partner with Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners, has been traveling to Nicaragua for 3 summers with colleagues to spread health and nutrition education to children. She works with a translator named Linda Weber and has been working in the community of Las Lagunas and at an orphanage in Chinandega called Hogar San Jose. In both places, Judith has educated young children on the importance of gardening and nutrition awareness in their lives. She has worked with over 60 girls at the orphanage planting square meter gardens and seed saving techniques. In Las Lagunas, she works alongside the local teachers, educating the students on healthy living. This year, she used two of our music CD’s titled Soy Una Pizza and La Tierra y el Mar to get the students active and excited about healthy food choices and the students have even begun to sing the songs during their free time. In both the classroom and orphanage, our Spanish Food Pyramid Poster is hanging on the wall. With our teacher instructions, Judith and her colleagues were able to put together Nutrition Booklets for the students to take home and learn from. For the lower level students, they used our two coloring books, Growing and Eating Fruits, and Vegetables. Judith said, "Your materials are the only ones we found suitable. Other products seemed too difficult or inappropriate."

Mrs. Cornell John Swett Elementary - 3rd   Grade   Martinez, California

Mrs. Cornell has been using Fruit and Vegetable Seedies for a few months now and swears by them. Before she ordered two cases of the seedies, her 3rd grade class would show up with snack packs of chips, pudding, and even cookies. To get them to eat healthier, Mrs. Cornell told them that if they brought in a fruit or vegetable for snack time, they would get to have the seedie on their desk for the rest of the day. (If a student brought in grapes, the grape seedie would stay on their desk). Now, every morning kids rush into the classroom to show Mrs. Cornell the snack they brought. The seedies are spread upon the desks before the bell has even rung. Kids have started to bring in all sorts of healthy snacks from apples to celery to even broccoli. (Yes, a girl brought in a bag of broccoli for snack!). Mrs. Cornell’s idea has spread to other classrooms and teachers have been talking about buying their own set. These seedies have been a great way to get students to EAT HEALTHY!
